Lesson 22 - First 1-point perspective drawing

This was an exciting one for me. The first one-point perspective drawing of a room.

Going to spend a few days doing one-points of different scenes.

Lesson 19 - The Cat that ate the Pyramids

My first cat. The dimensions weren't what I expected. The eyes are higher and the mouth is turned down. Like they're perpetually displeased.

Plus a couple of pyramids. Exploring the use of overlapping, shadows, nook-and-cranny shadows and placement to create a 3D effect.

Day 10 Houses

Drawing houses and a mailbox today. Was watching a video by Mark Kistler where he drew endless extensions of houses. Mark Kistler Houses I think I'll spend the next day or so working on that skill.

Day 9 Advanced Cylinders and Roses

More advanced cylinders. A rose, cups of coffee, a bunch of cylinders and a blind drawing of a water bottle. I like the water bottle and the rose. Shadowing is working better.

Day 8 Drawing flags, buildings and a bowl

My first building and some flags. Ramp didn't turn out that good. A bit off angle. Still not happy with the shadowing.

Day 7 Cube figures

Next task is to use the humble cube to make a table, a packing box and a chest. More shadows. Don't like the lid one for the chest but the rest of it is okay.

My sister is feeling better today but she had to go out and get groceries so didn't get much accomplished today either. Had a bit of a tumble today carrying Isaac. Managed to twist around so I wouldn't fall on him but bruised my tailbone pretty good. Will know better how it's doing tomorrow.

Today's drawing lesson was on textures: normal smooth, furry, wooden and water ball as well as punching holes in a sphere. Also did my first animal today. A cute koala, though it looks a bit sad.

Day 5 A Rack of Spheres

With my sister sick, it's been a hectic few days with the kids and little time for much else.Today 's effort is a rack of spheres. Drawing circles is getting better. More work with shading.

Day 4 Cubes!

Got tired of doing circles and spheres and jumped to squares and cubes today. Learned about foreshortened squares that extend to become cubes and the importance of guide lines.

Day 3 - Circles, Circles and more Circles

My circles look like crap--uneven, slightly squished--so I decided to spend today's lesson on drawing circles and then experimenting and practising more shading. Yay!

Not satisfied with just drawing these circular objects, I decided to experiment with different starting points, top, bottom, left and right. I discovered that top and bottom produced the best results for me, more even and symmetrical circles.

Playing around with various shading methods. Trying my hand at smudging. Not really a successful experiment. Have to work more at it.

Day 2 - Drawing overlapping spheres

This one was to learn about using size and placement to create the illusion of distance as well as overlapping objects and the use of nook-and-cranny shadows.
It definitely makes it pop. Looks more 3D. My shadows could use a lot more work. Maybe I'll spend tomorrow just practising shadows.

Happy New Year Everyone!

My first effort on Jan 1st. More than a bit rough considering I spent most of the time with my 4-yr old nephew who had his birthday party today.

Drawing circles in perspective with shadowing.

The right one is supposed to be an apple. Not that great but experimenting with different types of lines for shadows.

Learning to Draw

Adventures in Drawing Logo
Join the Fun
I'm a sci-fi/fantasy writer and a graphic designer.

That means that I can use Photoshop and other graphics software like a pro to manipulate any kind of electronic media and I understand graphic design principles and typography. But that does not mean I know how to draw.

I plan to rectify this.

So the goal is to learn to draw by the end of the year.

I'll be using various reference books on drawing. For those who want to follow along, I will post the info on the sidebar.

If anyone finds this blog and wants to join along, please feel free.
